Canon Rebel T3i (600D)Canon has released the newest Canon Rebel right on time. They have been producing a new model every year or so, and it has been a year since the Canon Rebel T2i spashed onto the photography market.

What's new about the Canon Rebel T3i?

This is an excellent question, but the answer is even more interesting. In fact a better question might be, "What's not new?"

First, here are some features of the T3i that have not been upgraded.

  1. 18-megapixel sensor - not changed
  2. DIGIC 4 processor - not changed
  3. 18-55mm kit lens - not changed
  4. Full HD 1080p at 30 fps (plus additional options for recording) - not changed
  5. ISO sensitivity of 100-6400 ISO expandable to 12800 ISO - not changed
  6. LCD panel with 1.02 million dots for increased quality
  7. Continuous burst rate of 3.7 frames per second - not changed

This list of "not changed" features might lead you to believe that it is not worth getting the Rebel T3i, but that is the wrong conclusion... TOTALLY WRONG. Because the things that did change make this Rebel the perfect entry-level digital SLR. Here they are:

  1. Articulating LCD screen
  2. Fully automatic "Green Square" (explained below)
  3. "Basic +" in-camera image adjustments (explained below)
  4. Feature Guide - features in camera settings have a desciption of the feature
  5. Video enhancement with 3-10x HD zoom similar to dedicated camcorders
  6. Off-camera multiple flash control

It appears that the Canon T3i is quite close in comparison to the 60D, especially with the addition of the articulating LCD screen. It also shares some of the features and functionality of the 7D AND the 60D in the area of image quality and video, since it has the identical 18-MP CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 processor.

Canon Has Raised The Bar For Entry-level DSLRs

(New Buyers in the Digital SLR Market... READ THIS)

If you are a photographer looking to move up from a point and shoot camera, there has never been a time so right for you.

Consider this. The Rebel T3i now has a "Green Square" that is totally auto pilot. The camera will compute all the factors present for the perfect exposure. Same as your old point and shoot camera, right? What could be an easier transition? It is Intelligent Auto on steriods. So, if you are at a party, outside, at night, you will still get great photos without having to know how to set the manual camera settings. Use the Green Square anytime you are not sure of how to set up your camera. Then, when you want to practice your photography skills with aperture and shutter speed, you can switch back to one of the "Creative Settings" and learn how to use your T3i more effectively.

Add to that, something called Basic +. This is a feature that allows you to change the outcome of a shot in-camera after shooting. So if you want to switch your photo to black and white or high contrast, you can do it without having to download to a computer. There are a number of effects you can choose from, including a fish-eye effect.

One more thing worth mentioning is not really an entry-level feature. The new T3i allows for multiple off camera flashes to be fired remotely. This brings visons of model and product shots.. pretty cool.

Bottom Line:

Is the newest Canon entry level DSLR worthy of your attention? Writing a Canon Rebel T3i reveiw is quite elementary. I think the camera line and its history speak for themselves. Canon Rebels have been a top choice of entry-level digital photographers since 2003 when the first sub-$1000 digital SLR was introduced. The T3i stands to be the next best buy for those who are looking to enter the DSLR world.
